I don’t know how to begin this review, Ghost Game is one of those films that it’s not really a bad movie, but it’s not good either. I don’t know how to explain it really, I mean I watched the whole film straight though and was pretty entertained by it. I guess really what it all came down to is that I thought the film seemed very unoriginal. The beginning of the film kind of reminded of a 70’s and 80’s Italian horror flick, like something Fulci or Argrento would of directed. Then the film went into the present day where it seemed the whole idea of “Ghost Game” spawned from films such as “Evil Dead” “Cabin Fever” and “Hellraiser”. All in All it reminded me of one of those direct to video films I used to rent as a kid growing up in the eighties. They were never really good films, but for some reason I always liked watching them.

“Ghost Game” starts off with three witches walking though the forest, one of them talks about being very powerful and is trying to gain more power. She turns on one of the other witches and a fight ensues and all three of the mend up killing one another, with the help of a dark figure who lives in the woods who kills off the powerful witch. Then al of a sudden it’s like this game is made out of this box, (kind of like Hellraiser). Then we’re put into the present day, with a bunch of stupid college kids who just want to get high and screw each other. They are all getting ready to go on a camping trip (No Surprise) by a lake. They get to the place and cross the lake in a canoe and while at the cabin, they find this box and open it. Then WAM! They get stuck in this game where they have to fulfill the needs of these witches in the game, in order to escape with their lives.

I thought the script was a bit in a sense “All over the place” I mean you can understand what was going on, but it seemed like the film was full of a lot of pointless one-liners and one death after the other. Their was also a big problem with the way the characters were written in this picture. You never really felt like you had a main character to relate too, and every time you felt you did, they were killed off. The end of the picture kind of made little sense too, as we were left not knowing what the outcome of the witches truly was.

The acting is kind of up in the air, I felt that most of the male cast was pretty bad, and I felt the majority of the female cast did a pretty good job. The Ted Raimi look-alike I though was the best actor in the whole film. As far as the special effects go, they’re not that bad. I mean we get some stuff that did just look just plain fake, but the blood and make-up effects were pretty decent.

Overall, Ghost Game had a pretty decent concept, but I felt it lacked in many areas. Don’t get me wrong, I found the film to be entertaining, I just felt that it lacked in many areas. Believe it or not I think with a better script and a better budget, Ghost Game could make one hell of film. There’s a good story here, the script just needs to be polished up a bit. So overall, it’s not a bad film, but not a good one either, and is probably worth renting if your like me and miss those direct to video films from the eighties.
