Horror comedies over the past few years have been either dumbed down to pointless entertainment where the film is more stupid than funny. They poke fun at the clichés of the genre and don’t really offer anything better than Scary Movie did when it first came out more than a decade ago. So how does one make a horror comedy original? They don’t really, but basing one off a comic book with comedic actions does help, even if the acting in the film is not all that great.
Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh) is a retired monster… not hunter but more of a peace keeper representing the human race. His former job was to keep the peace among monsters such as vampires, werewolves and zombies. He was also the one to keep their identities a secret from the human race as well. Then one day he retired, and became a private investigator instead. That is until a man was killed by a werewolf, a man who would help smuggle ancient artifacts into the ports of New Orleans. Desperate to find the werewolf that killed her father, Elizabeth (Anita Briem) hires Dylan and his sidekick Marcus (Sam Huntington) to take on the case. Dylan refuses at first until Marcus is attacked and killed by one of the undead. Luckily, Marcus comes back to life as a zombie, and is able to tell Dylan what killed him. Together they go on a quest to solve the mystery of “Who did it” and why these murders are occurring. Could it be members of the Werewolf clans, the vampire clans or the undead that want to rule the world? Only Dylan Dog can find out and stop it before it happens.
I went into this one not expecting much. The reviews for the film were sub par as is usually the case with horror comedies. However, the plot is actually really good and I enjoyed the whole “Monsters living among humans” atmosphere the story had. I never read the popular comic book so I really had no clue about the characters and how the story would play out. However, I did enjoy the storyline with its tongue-in-cheek humor and one-liners. I haven’t had this much fun with a horror comedy since Monster Squad. However, the film does have it faults. The acting in the film is nothing special, and this goes for the whole cast with the exception of Sam Huntington who was great as Marcus the zombie. While watching the film I just felt that a lot of the actors either did not take the film and their roles seriously or simply just had a hard time staying in character. Everything else in the film from the set design to the visual and make-up effects was fine. But the acting was not that great and it did have an effect on my opinion of this film.
The Blu-ray disc is for the most part bare bones with English STS-HD Master Audio with English SDH and Spanish subtitles.
Dylan Dog is one of those films you rent on a Saturday night with your friends, have a few beers and just kick back and have a good time. It’s nothing great, but it’s a fun film with a really entertaining plot. Like I said it has its flaws, but overall it’s a fun film that is worth checking out. I had a lot of mindless fun watching it.
