You know there are just some films, no matter how low budget they look or feel that you just can’t help but over look the effect and realize that that the story and characters are not all that bad. Such is the fact with this little Sci-fi film entitled “Dream Parlor” Now I’m not a big fan of films like this at all, But I give credit where credit is due. And for a film that’s script was written with the intention of being a big budget opus, but lacked the funding to do so, “Dream Parlor” is a script that with the right budget could by far look just as good as it was written. But with that aside, below are my thoughts.
The script is good, and while watching the film I felt the characters dialogue was good, and the character development was decent. The story although a bit confusing was decent and the script towards the end of the film got the point across. On terms of a good decent script I felt the film was good in what it accomplished. I’m sure with more time and effort the script could of been better, but was still great nonetheless.
The acting was pretty good, although I did feel that some of the actors did not fit the parts they were playing. I mean I felt that if this film was intended to be a seller, that the leads could of been cast better. Not to say that the actors who played the parts were bad actors, but I think that in terms of the roles that the parts could of been cast better. Now as far as the overall acting went in this film, Everyone did a pretty decent, if not good job performing in this picture.
Well the downfall this picture had is it’s lack of special effects. However what I praise this film for is the fact that the filmmakers tried there best to make the effects look as good as possible. With today’s film being covered in great special effects with make-up and CGI. We as an audience tend to be spoiled but such great shots that rely on CGI to make the shot look good. In this film it was more of a technique that the filmmakers had to use in terms of building sets that looked close enough to being real, and relying on close up’s and good camera angles to give us the feel of being some place in the future.
Overall “Dream Parlor” is a great independent Science Fiction story, it’s not normally the type of Sci-fi I’m into, but I know a good story when I see one and this is a great effort for a film shot with a minimal budget. If you ever saw “Total Recall” the story is somewhat similar plot wise, but it’s a whole different story. Overall “Dream Parlor” is a great pictures among Independent Sci-Fi.
