If you have ever seen the film “Dead & Buried”, you’ll see that “Dead & Breakfast” is a very similar film plot wise, however in terms of it’s style and script they differ in many way. A lot can be said about “Dead & Breakfast”, you can compare many things in the script and plot to pieces of many well know horror films such as “Night of the Living Dead”, “The Hills Have Eyes”, “Evil Dead” and “Return of the Living Dead” to name a few. I think many horror fans will be able to pick up the comparisons. But all that aside, “Dead & Breakfast” is a rollercoaster ride of film that twists and turns all over the screen.
When looking at the plot to “Dead & Breakfast” it’s just as I described above, there are many twists and turns with the plot, however with all of them the film manages to keep the same story line. I think it might be a hit or miss depending on the viewer if you are going to enjoy this film or not, I found the problem for me was that film had such great character development and when you were just starting to get a feeling for the characters, BAM!!! They we’re killed off. But with all that aside the story keeps pushing on and the plot only get crazier and better.
The acting is just like this film, A rollercoaster ride, Sometimes it was up (good), and sometimes it was down (bad). But all in all if you look at it from just a normal point of view I believe the director was trying to give it a b-movie feel at times, and with all the dark humor written into the script it was hard to tell if the bad acting in the film was meant to be part of the story, giving the audience the inside tip, that Hey! It’s only a movie. But all in all I give the acting a rating of alright. Some actors were better than others.
As far as effects go, let me just say this. This film had some much blood and gore, that any fan of extreme horror would appreciate all the campy effects and decapitated heads. There were some many make up effects, that I don’t know where to begin. Were they good effect? Yes for the most part they were pretty decent. But with all that’s going on in this film, you won’t care about how good or bad the effects are because you’ll be having such a blast watching this film.
Overall “Dead & Breakfast” is a good old classic American horror film, that bring you back into the hay days of when direct to video films were good. What I mean by that is that it has that 80’s direct to video feeling with a storyline that is out of this world crazy, yet it’s more fun than Disney World but just as sloppy as using a lubed condom during sex. Overall I really enjoyed this film and I’m sure most horror fans such as yourselves will get a kick out of it.
