“Dead Birds” is a film that uses the “Less is More” method of filmmaking. Now don’t get me wrong there is some gore in this picture, but it’s used tastefully. The cool thing about this film is that it is a horror western, We rarely get treated to one, but it looks like they are starting to make somewhat of a dent in the genre. So don’t let that box art fool you, it is in fact, just a marketing ploy. Cool box art if you ask me.
So about the plot and script, well it’s alright, I give director Alex Turner a lot of credit for making a decent picture with a minimal budget, as a filmmaker myself I can tell that if this script had more funding they could of done a lot more with the film. But they made an alright film with what they had. So in a nutshell the script is alright. The plot is about a young gang who is robbing banks on their way to Mexico. After robbing a bank in a local western town and killing everyone inside, they find an old house where no one seems to be home. However there is something in the house that’s going to make then wished they never stopped there.
The acting in this film was pretty good, plenty of familiar faces in it. Henry Tomas of “ET” has the lead role, and in supporting roles are Nicki Lynn Aycox (Jeepers Creepers 2), Isaiah Washington (Ghost Ship), Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous) and Muse Watson (I (Still) Know What You Did Last Summer). So the film has a pretty god case made of of people who have been in horror films before. So the acting is not half bad at all.
So Overall its kind of one of those films that’s not boring to watch, you wil lbe able to get though, but its just an alright horror film. I give the studio credit for just sticking this film on DVD. I don’t think it would of have fared well in theaters. But overall it’s worth renting if your just looking to watch a horror film.
