I’ve read some positive reviews about this film so when I heard of it’s video release in Blockbuster, I figured I’d use my rental pass to check this one out. Well maybe the other horror reviewers on other sites saw something different than I did. Now I’m not going to say the film is bad, but I did not think it was good either. My eyes kind of wandered around the room looking for other things to do at some points of the film, luckily I had nothing else to do but write this review or you’ll be seeing a no stars review, with less writing as I probably would of shut it off. However I didn’t and the film got better from a beginning that did not catch my attention at all.

The film is about this guy a camera journalist who likes to film messed up stories, well he gets a tip that there are “Ghouls” or “Zombies” if you will, living below the city streets and they will attack or eat anyone or anything for that matter that crosses their path. Sounds simple enough, right?

First and foremost the cool thing about this movie is that it’s a tribute to other zombie films and even has some appearances by some known faces of the zombie genre. “Dawn of the Dead” remake writer James Gunn has a cameo as well as “Day of the Dead” star Joe Pilato. the zombie are pretty cool looking, some decent effects but nothing great, their no Romero zombies if you get my point.

The Acting is alright, but some of it is hard to follow, I know there was meant to be some form of reality Television format to be part of the films story, but some of the acting and stars were boring at times. I didn’t feel anything for them, and was not at all interested in them. Do I blame the writing for this, kind of but the film was more driven by story than characterization. At least in my opinion anyway.

Overall “Ghouls” is a film that I think the low budget/B-movie fans will enjoy more than the regular horror fans, The film can also be considered a Zombie Exploitation film as well, but over all I just think it’s alright, nothing great.
