When this DVD first arrived at my doorstep, I actually thought it was gay porn. Then I took a closer look at the cover and saw that yes in deed it was some buff dude covered in plants, but that he was imprisoning women in the vines from which he was attached too. I turned over the box and read the synopsis for the film and was surprised to read that the film did have a pretty cool story. It was also being compared to grindhouse horror and Italian giallo films. So I figured I’d pop this sucker into the DVD player and give it a go. To my great surprise the film was pretty good.
Now before you ask yourself why I was at first mistaken by the cover for being something I thought might of not been mine, hence (gay porn) is because thee guy who is “The Gardener” in this film happens to look like Fabio. And yes there are some ass shots of the dude in the film, I’m not going to lye to you guys. Pretty much this whole film revolves around this dude using plant to get rich chicks to fall in love with them so he can kill them after he screws them. What a player, or is it Playa or some shit like that. Anyway that pretty much is the plot right there, plain and simple. So you must be saying to yourself, why the hell did you like this film Horror Bob? Well the answer my friends is that besides sounding like a really bad Exploitation film, this film indeed has a very solid script and is fairly easy to follow despite it’s 1970’s European look. I for one really got into this flick for the pure fact that the script was straight forward with no bullshit attacked.
The acting at times was a bit off, but overall it’s nothing that will make the average horror fans think the acting bad. I mean it’s nothing great, but it’s not all that bad either considering the look and feel of the film, and the story for that matter.
In terms of special effects. Well, there’s not much to really talk about here. We have some alright make-up effects and that’s about it. Noting really special here. However don’t let the effects in anyway affect your opinion of the script. This film as I mentioned above has a very tight and straight forward script.
Overall, I liked this film, its a simple and effective story, which even with the weird plot line, it works. I really had a good time watching it and it’s well worth the 87 minutes of your life to give this film a go, especially anyone of you horror fans who are into the grindhouse horror or the 1970’s and Italian giallo flicks.
