So, I popped this DVD into the DVD and began to watch it. Within the first few minutes I figured out that “House of 9” is kind of like “Battle Royale” “Saw” and “Cube” in one. The film is about a group of random people, most of them are somewhat famous for something, however none of them know mush about each other at all. They are all adducted and all wake up in a house together. They soon realize they are trapped in the house and the only way out is to play a sick and twisted game in which the last person standing will win five million dollars. At first there is not much tension and just about everyone refuses to play the game, however no matter how hard they and work together to get out of the house, they soon realize they have no other options but to play the game.
This is a film where each character does not really want to hurt one another, however it’s really all a matter of time until the cabin fever sets in and shit starts to hit the fan. That’s what I love about these kind of films. The script is unique in it’s own way. There are some very well written scenes that coincide with MOS shots, a lot of them. Now the MOS (Music over scene) shot do come off a bit annoying at first, but with the way the film is shot, towards the middle of the film they set the mood for the next scene.
Now this is kind of straying from the review a bit, but I could of ended everyone’s life in that house just using the potatoes they were eating. You see knowledge is the key here. Over this past summer I took a food management course. Potatoes are in fact the most dangerous food you can eat, if not cooked right. There is a spore called botulism, which in fact is the pure form of botox. Just slip them a few potatoes that have been sitting out to long and BAM! they all die. Would of made for a good ending but not that many people know that about potatoes. Anyway enough with my babbling and editcated you readers about spuds.
The acting in this film was pretty decent, I mean nothing that’s going to turn heads, but each actor did a good job with there roles. Dennis Hopper whom is probably the best known actor in this film, was pretty good as the prist, however his irish acent was a bit weird. Maybe it’s just cause I’m used to seeing him and hearing him play himself.
There was not much in the way of special effects, I mean there was blood, and a few stabings and gunshots. A few beatdowns and so on But in term of effects they were all pretty basic.
Overall “House of 9” was a pretty decent film, with one hell of a surprise ending. It is well worth the rent if you liked “Cube” or “Saw”. I liked it, and even though it’s not the best film, it was pretty good in my book.
