It’s 5:27 am and I just finished watching the “DOOM” DVD and felt compelled to write a quick review. Why? Because much to my surprise despite some ridiculousness I thought it was pretty damn entertaining! I didn’t see it in the theater but now wish I had which I always consider a good thing when watching a DVD. Not that the film translates badly cause it doesn’t but it’s just one of those surround sound F/X extravaganzas that would have rocked I bet.
Yeah it’s stupid and you have dumb down a little and turn off some of your bad movie radar (or good movie radar, whatever works for you) and turn on your mindless fun movie radar . The acting is actually good for this type of movie and the characters are all the appropriate clichéd stereotypes that no sci-fi -horror-action flick should be without. Difference here is there is no Michelle Rodriguez to annoy me like in “Resident Evil” and when the film descends in to utter predictability it does so in an entertaining fashion. The Rock plays against his recent “anti-hero” type and plays an asshole (quite well too) and the rest of the cast does pretty well with what is often a horrible script. The “god that was stupid” moments are kept to a minimum and pretty much all the people that you want to die do and vice versa.. The F/X were really good I thought as well. The film takes place in dark and shadows much of the time so I didn’t feel over CGI’d and the F/X team used a nice combo of live action/green screen AND CGI to get what I thought was a great looking movie.
The highlight of the film is certainly the “First Person Shooter” segment! Man that was COOOOL!! I won’t explain that because if you don’t know what it is you wouldn’t be reading this right now anyway. Fans of the game will be thrilled (I was) and everyone else will wanna go play the game ASAP! The longer version in the extras is really freaking cool. Good time to mention the extras I suppose. I don’t own XBOX so I couldn’t access many of the extras but what I saw was pretty good if not very long. FPS extra is the best. I could have down without “Basic Training” with The Rock but it was OK none the less. The others are all entertaining if not riveting although DOOM-aholics will no doubt find them so and XBOX owners apparently are in for a real treat.
Hey DOOM isn’t amazing but it sure was fun and it does have zombies in it which means I can write about it! Go rent it and grab some brews or do a few bongs (or whatever you do ) and enjoy…you could do a lot worse.
