John Landis mixes dark humor and gore in Deer Women, one of the better Masters of Horror episodes in my opinion. It’s not really a scary film, but it does have some pretty gruesome scenes including dead bodies that are pretty much stomped into bloody pieces. Its quite a film, that dwells in comedy and the bizarre.
Deer Women, is about a guy whom is an animal detective. He investigates all kind of weird bizarre animal behavior such as dog bites and cat scratches. Most of his colleagues think his job is a joke, because most of them are on real cases. When a body is mysteriously found in pieces in the back of a tractor trailer at a local hang out. When Detective Dwight Faraday is called to the scene he has no clue what has happened. the case is then taken away from him and given to another not so good detective. However Dwight dwells on the case and visits the local cornier to view the body. He then comes up with theories that the killer must have used a deer leg to kill the victim with. But it sounds crazy, that is until it begins to happen again and again. His partner and him then visit a local casino where an Indian man tells them the legend of the deer women. A beautiful women, with the legs of a deer whom seduces men to sleep with her then kills them by stomping them to death. Dwight soon realizes that his theory is true and must stop the deer women from killing more men.
I have to admit the plot is very weird and very odd to even think about. However the film is very good and a blast to watch. It’s got the gore and it’s got the comedy all of which together in this film work very well. Landis is known for directing more comedy films and has also had his share of directing good horror films such as “American Werewolf in London”. This was the perfect script for him to direct, well not to mention that him and his brother also write it together. But hey he is the perfect guy for the job. I loved the script, and thought that is was something fresh and original without being to over the top. It had the perfect mix of both horror and comedy.
The acting is pretty good, I have no complaints there. I mean it your typical television detective, X-files like cast, but they all did a good job. The effects in the film are pretty decent as well. The CGI is a bit funny, but it works very well, especially in the comedy aspect of the film. There’s not much in the way of make-up effects, however the dead bodies look very realistic.
Overall, I really enjoyed the slick and horrific film. I laughed most of the time, and well my eyes even widened as there are some great looking women in this film as well. The plot was original and we get one hell of a fun horror flick. Well worth checking out.
