This is one hell of a DVD, It’s cool to see someone from your neck of the woods making it somewhat big time. Stevan Mena is a cool guy, who I’ve managed to hang out with and interview one night. He actually shot some scenes of Malevolence right down the road from where I live. The DVD which will be out April 19th. The DVD includes a crap load of Special Features. This is a must buy people.

I have to admit that Anchor Bay has come though for us fans again and has given us a DVD packed with extra features. The Featurette “Back to the Slaughterhouse” shows how the film was made and the origin behind the film and it’s locations. “The Dark Side of Horror” Documentary talks with actress Samantha Dark, about her experience working on “Malevolence” and talks about horror in general. This DVD is top notch. A must have for all horror fans. You won’t feel ripped off at all. Get this DVD when it comes out. You can read my review of Malevolence below.
My “Malevolence” Review: Reviewed Sept. 2004
I was fortunate enough to attend the premiere of “Malevolence” now being distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment as their first theatrically released film. Well folks if “Malevolence” comes to a theater near you anytime soon, I advise you get in your car or jump on your bicycle and get your ass to the theater.
I’ll go on record as saying that “Malevolence” is by far the best horror film I have seen so far this year. This film folks is real horror at it’s best. The film has many overtones of films from the seventies and eighties. The inspiration of such great films as, “Halloween”, “Friday the 13th”, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” can be seen throughout the film and it makes it that much better. However “Malevolence” has it’s own original story, and the overall tone of the film gives you that creepy feel of the past great horror films mentioned above.
The look of the film is perfect, it’s got that grainy documentary feel that Texas Chainsaw Massacre has, however it looks a bit more cleaner but it’s to the point where you feel like you are there in the film. The lighting is right on the mark and actually gives you that feeling of uneasiness, The production value is beyond great and really helps drive the film forward not just in story and atmosphere, but it also helped a great deal with the scare factor of the film. The special make-up effects were good for and looked at times almost to real, but the less is more routine is used more and helps make the film that much better.
The acting in the film was great, for a film cast with unknowns some of which I’m sure was their first film ever, they really made this film. The directing was what made the actors look so good, it’s good to know that there are people such as Stevan Mena who know their horror well enough to give the true horror fans who feel that Hollywood has been cutting them short a good horror film that goes against all the rules and lives up to being nothing but a perfect horror picture that will leave fans chewing at their popcorn cornels.
Overall, “Malevolence” is an instant horror classic joining the likes of such greats as “The Evil Dead”, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Halloween”. Horror films from first time directors don’t get any better than this. You’d only be cheating yourself by not going to see this film. By far the best horror film I’ve seen this year.
