I have to give the creators of PATHOLOGY some credit for coming up with a somewhat original idea for a horror/thriller that comes off as a smart horror film, but one that gets seriously trippy and sadistic as it moves on. What can be said about this film is that it borders on the torture horror porn scene but it’s not as crazy or intense as films like HOSTEL or SAW, and there is more use of ripping apart and dissecting bodies that are already dead, but then again some of those bodies happen to be of victims that the medical students just murdered.

PATHOLOGY is about a group of medical students who are considered the best in the future of the medical field. Dr. Ted Grey (Milo Ventimiglia), a recent graduate of Harvard Medical School has been accepted into the Pathology program. Being such a bright student he quickly became a part of a elite group that has special privileges. The guy in charge of the group; Dr Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) brings the group into a secluded area where they can cut open a body and determine the cause of death and just have some fun doing what they love to do. However one night while there all out a bar, a conversation is bought up on how it seems so easy to get away with murder in their profession. They make a bet with one another has to who can pull it off, but as things heat up, Dr. Grey soon realizes that this is becoming more than just a simple game of who can kill first, but that anyone is fare game for being the victim.

PATHOLOGY has a decent script, it does seem to begin slow with that dark feel to it that you get when you watch some of the Asian horror flicks around or some of the latter teen horror films that came out in the late nineties and turn of the century like URBAN LEGEND and SOUL SURVIVORS. It has that dark uncomfortable feel that those films have, where it seems like around every corner something going to pop out and get you. However unlike those film we know who the killers are in this film and what they are up too. It does not necessary make the film that much more fearful, but it works on giving the audience that eerie feel. The characters are developed alright in this film, it’s not that the script really focuses on developing all the characters as much as it does Dr. Grey, but we get the understanding of who is who, even if we really don’t care about them. The script does have it’s issues but overall is decent.

The acting in the film is alright; lets put it this way. It works, and that’s all we really need for a film like this. I’d say the actors in the lead roles in the film are the ones that stand out the most. The production value of the film is also pretty decent. I mean it’s a simple set up where the locations are nothing huge, and all of it looks as if it was shot on location instead of in a studio. the effects are good, the overall shot, feel and visuals are all very good, and pretty much if you were to look at the film overall appearance it has a dark feel that really goes along with the dark story.

Overall, PATHOLOGY is dark, and gritty and it does have a lot of disturbing scenes that will give the hardcore horror fan something to salivate over. It’s not an over the top gore fest but it does have some pretty brutal scenes. As for my opinion I found it to be an alright film. It had it’s up and downs and in my opinion I think it was alright. It’s a film that I’m in no rush to pop this one back into my DVD player anytime soon.
