Super Hybrid is a film that is similar to Stephen King and John Carpenter’s Christine. However, the only thing they really have in common is that they are both about killer cars. Christine was possessed by an unknown force; Super Hybrid is inhabited by some kind of creature with the ability to make this car shape shift and do all kinds of odd things to kill and consume its prey.
The film is about this killer car that ends up being towed into an underground police impound yard after being part of an accident. The lot is set to close down, however the lot attendant agrees to take in this one last car. Unfortunately for him and his co-workers, this car is about to ruin their night. As the evening progresses the car comes to life and begins to kill everyone working in the garage. The workers are trapped as the only exit is being guarded by the car, all the emergency exits have been sealed shut because of excessive break-ins and theft have occurred in the garage. Now the remaining workers must band together to figure a way to destroy the car and get out of the garage alive.
This film had a decent plot; however the story was nothing special. Super Hybrid is one of those films that were not made for the SyFy channel but it seems like it was. The special effects were done in that not so great, cheap B-movie like fashion that I would not be surprised to see this film as a SyFy original movie on Saturday Night. Other than some decent acting and some blood and guts the film is really nothing special. On the positive side you can at least follow the plot and not be bored with it, but it’s not by any means a great film.
The Blu-ray disc has one special feature titled Under the Hood of Super Hybrid which is about the making of the film and the car itself. It also has English and Spanish subtitles. Other than that it is pretty much bare bones.
Overall, Super Hybrid is one of those B-movie horror films that are easily forgettable. It is not a bad movie, but it’s not a goods one either. Some will like it more than others, but it is not a film that you’re going to want to watch again. If you’re into killer car films then you’ll probably like this one. However, I think most will agree Super Hybrid is just another sub-par horror flick.
