SAM’S LAKE is another one of those people go to the lake in the woods movie.. In fact, We really don’t see a lake all the much in the movie at all. We have seen plenty of movies like this before, so why not add another to the mix. The thing with SAM’S LAKE however is that it tries to be different .
SAM’S LAKE starts off with a bunch of young twenty something year olds going on a trip to a home deep in the woods on a lake. When they get there they hang out, start a fire, and tell scary stories. Sam grew up in the cabin on the lake, and this has become a yearly tradition for her to come here with her friends and enjoy the outdoors. But the area does have a haunting past, where people where killed by mad man. When the story is told beside the camp fire of the incident, the curious campers want to go and check out the location. One of Sam’s childhood friends who also grew up in the area agrees to show her friends the place. However, they will soon find out that the evil is still there, and is waiting to strike once again.
Here is yet another case of your basic camper/collage age kids in the woods horror movie. While the script is somewhat decent it’s very similar to the likes of FRIDAY THE 13TH and movies similar to that style. The script is nothing special but it does have a nice little twist to the story despite it’s plot. I will give the writers credit as the characters in the movie are not your basic run of the mill characters that you would normally see in a horror film. Well maybe not, but as things turn out you realize that certain character in the movie take on different roles than expected.
The movie has decent acting and production value. I mean the acting’s nothing special, but it works and is better than the majority of acting I’ve seen in independent horror productions. The production value is just your basic cabin in the wood scenario with a few run down cabins and building thrown in the mix. There is some decent make-up effects but nothing original or over the top.
Overall, SAM’S LAKE is not a movie that is going to turn heads. It’s a decent little flick that tries it’s best to take the whole campers in the woods horror movie to a new level, but it’s still something that we’ve all seen before. It’s better than the majority of horror films with the same premise, but it’s nothing that we all haven’t seen before. I really don’t have much to say about the movie other than it was alright. It’s not a bad movie to watch if you have some time to kill. It has a decent story and it won’t bore you to death with it’s the story it tells.
