The Horror Review: EST: 1999

Horror Bob's Top Ten

2008 in my opinion was a slow year for horror films. Why the majority of the really good films barely hit theaters, they came to life on DVD or in limited release. Word of mouth among horror fans seemed to play a big role in what many feel were this years hits. However I have my own opinions of which films I found to be the best of this year and they are displayed in my top ten list for 2008 below.

MOVIE RANK HORROR BOB'S TOP TEN OF 2008
Låt den rätte komma in (Let the Right One In) (2008)

1

Let the Right One In:   Director: Tomas Alfredson

I was never a big fan of Vampire films.  That's a little well known fact about me. Never cared much for them, unless they had a classic feel to them.  With that said I choose which is probably the best vampire film so far this century. There is a lot of great little things hidden in this movie that make it more than just your run of the mill horror film. Everything from the script to the way it was filmed was top notch; making Let The Right One In my number one movie for 2008.

The Midnight Train (2008)  2   The Midnight Meat Train :   Director: Ryûhei Kitamura

What was Lion Gates thinking by not giving this horror masterpiece a wide release. Many missed out on this great Clive Barker adaption in theaters. Hopefully all the horror fans will rent it when it hits DVD in February.  This is one of the best adaption of a Clive Baker story to film.

Repo: The Genetic Opera (2008)  3 Repo: The Genetic Opera :   Director: Darren Lynn Bousman

This is THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW of our time. Honestly I kind of liked it better. It's one of, if not the best horror musical ever shot on film (or should I say HD).

The Signal (2008)  4   The Signal :   Director: David Bruckner,  Dan Bush, &  Jacob Gentry.

I never wrote a review for this film, because I recently saw it.  But it was one that worth the wait to see. A very well made independent flick where a technological signal takes over people's minds and makes them do messed up things to one another.  This was a film that made your brain work, and made you think about it well after it ended.

Rogue (2008)  5   Rogue:  Director: Greg Mclean

This is by far the best killer Crocodile movie I have ever seen. Sure it's a bit campy. But it reminded me of some of the better direct to video films I watched in the 80's as a kid. I had a blast with this one and not to mention the script was pretty good too.

Splinter (2008)  6   Splinter:   Director: Toby Wilkins

Expect Splinter to be a film that starts the scary parasite horror film all over again. Sure we had Cabin Fever a few years back, and the movie is almost similar to John Carpenters The Thing.  But I've read two books this year that have a very similar premise, and both are said to be in the works to be made into a film. Similar in structure to The Ruins but a much better and more mysterious storyline.

The Strangers (2008)  7 The Strangers :   Director: Bryan Bertino

Before I entered the theater to see this one, some sixteen year old girl looked me in the eye and said The Strangers sucked.  I knew right then and there I was going to like this one, as it was made more for the smart horror fan than it was for the average teen horror fan. A very well made movie full of a lot of suspenseful moments.

Inside (2008)

8 Inside  Director: Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury

Here's a film that got it's DVD release this year here in the U.S. despite being released in 2007.  This is one of those films that from beginning to end is a real nail biter. Just one of those films that make you feel very uncomfortable while your watching it.

Jack Brroks: Monster Slayer (2008)  9  Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer: Director: Jon Knautz

Sometimes, you just need to have fun while watching a horror film and let some of the craziness and wackiness just fly out the window. This film was the one that did that for me this year, as it was a throwback to all those over the top direct to video horror movies I watched as a kid back in the eighties.  It was full of big monster special effects, cheesy one liners and not the best acting in the world.. But my god this movie was fun to watch.

Brutal Massacre (2007) 10 Brutal Massacre :   Director: Stevan Mena

OK, OK I know I was in this film, but never made the final cut. (I'm on the DVD in the extended scenes.) But all aside, I had a blast watching Brutal Massacre, Not just because I think it's a good horror comedy, but because I knew a lot of the inside jokes throughout the film.  it's one of those cult comedy classics that I think many people will enjoy, especially struggling filmmakers.

Honorable Mentions:

They Wait

Gabriel

Darkness Surrounds Roberta

The Worst

Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds

The Cook

The Happening

Steel Trap

Killer Pad

Note: List subject to change.  I still have to see a few more films.
