I have seen my fair share of really bad horror and science fiction films. The majority of them a low budget b-movies that mainly are independently made or are made for the SyFy channel .However, there are those b-movie films with big budgets that actually work. Last year we had Piranha 3D which was good in all it’s B-movie fashion. This year we get Shark Night, a film that has cheesy b-move written all over it. However it is not all that great.

Shark Night is about a group of college kids that take a trip to a private home on a private island in the middle of a salt water lake. What they don’t know is that there are several species of sharks that somehow have made their home in the lake. What turns out to be just a fun day on the water, turns into a nightmare when one of the students loses his arm water skiing. At first everyone thinks that his are was cut off by the boat propeller, however on the way back to the mainland they soon discover a shark is to blame and are forced to head back to the island. As they make many attempts to make it back to the mainland and fail, they soon realize that the help that has come to the island is not much help at all and that there is a whole other reason why there are sharks in the lake.

Shark Night is toned down compared to many other big budget b-movies. While it has hot girls in bikini’s there is no nudity, a lot of profanity, and the blood is too red to look real. The film is only rated PG-13 and I have to admit if you look past the poor CGI, bad acting and cheesy one liners it is an entertaining film. Just don’t expect it to be scary like Jaws.

The Blu-ray disc has some special features which include Shark Attack! Kill Machine!, Shark Night’s Survival Guide, Fake Shark, Real Scares and Ellis’ Island featurettes. The Blu-ray disc also comes with a digital copy of the film also.

Overall, Shark Night is a decent B-movie and is at the very least entertaining to watch. I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a good time watching this film. However, as far as it being a great killer shark horror flick; that is not. It is one of those b-movie films that made strictly for entertainment purposes only in a Roger Corman like fashion.
