2003 Winners


 

Best Picture (Horror/Thriller)-  House of 1000 Corpses

 

It was fight to the bitter end between "House of 1000 Corpses" with 33.2% of the vote and "28 Days Later" with 24.7% of the the vote. Both films battled it out to the bitter end but "House" came out on top. The other films "Freddy vs. Jason" in third with 22.9%, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)" with 10.9% in forth and in fifth was "Cabin Fever" with 8.2%.

 


 

Best Picture (Sci-Fi/Fantasy)-  Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

 

No Big Surprise here "Return of the King" had 58.8% of the vote, in a distant second was "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" with 17.2%, in third was "X-Men 2" with 12%,  "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" was in forth with 9.6% and "The Matrix Reloaded" was in fifth with 2.4%.

 


 

Best Picture (Video/Limited Release)-  May

 

Another blowout here, "May" took the top prize with 52.2% of the vote, In second was "Beyond Re-Animator" with 21.7%, in third was "The Eye" with 17.8%, forth was "Mimic 3: Sentinel" with 5.65 and "Lucky" was fifth with 2.8%.

 


 

Best Foreign Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller or Fantasy Film-  28 Days Later

 

This is two year in a row that British film has won this prize, " 28 Days Later" had 65.1% of the vote blowing away all it's competition. "The Eye" was in second with 23.4%, "Undead" was third with  6.2%, forth was "A Tale of Two Sisters" with 2.9% and in fifth was "Ju-on: The Grudge 2" with 2.4%.

 

PLEASE NOTE THAT VOTING IN THE BEST FOREIGN FILM CATEGORY, THAT THE RULES HAVE CHANGED FOR THE 2004 VOTE. THE FOREIGN FILM MUST HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN THE USA ON DVD OR IN THEATERS IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE.


 

Best Screenplay (Theater) (Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller/Fantasy) - Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

 

Well last year "The Two Towers" failed to take this prize but it's sequel "Return of the King" did this year with 40.2% of the vote, in Second was "Kill Bill: Volume 1" with 25.1% of the vote, in third was Identity with 20.6%, Forth place went to "28 Days Later" with 11.65 and "Gothika" came in fifth with 2.5%.

 


 

Best Screenplay (Video) (Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller/Fantasy) - May

 

Another award for "May" with 60.3% of the vote, in second was "The Eye" with 18.5%, "Flesh for the Beast" came in third with 11.6%, in forth was Undead with 5.5% and fifth place went to Mimic 3: Sentinel with 4.1%.

 


 

Best Special Effects In A Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller/Fantasy Film (CGI, Visual) (Theater and Video)

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

 

Not much of a surprise here with 65.7% of the vote "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" took this category, followed by "Final Destination 2" with 12.9%, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines "with 10.1%, and both "Matrix Reloaded" and "Matrix Revolutions" both tied for forth and fifth place with 5.65 of the vote each.

 


 

Best Makeup Effects In A (Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller/Fantasy Film) (Theater and Video)

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

 

Once again not a surprise win for "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King "winning with 38% of the vote, followed up by "Freddy vs. Jason" with 20.8%, "House of 1000 Corpses" with 17.7%, "Cabin Fever" with 15.6% and Jeepers Creepers 2 with 7.8%.

 


 

Best Kill in a (Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Thriller) Film-  House of 1000 Corpses (Cop Shot in Head)

 

This is always the category that many people have a tough time voting in.  This years winner with 32.7% of the vote is from "House of 1000 Corpses" that long drawn out silence when Otis shoots Deputy Steve Naish in the head. In second was the car accident scene from "Final Destination 2" with 25.1%, Third was Jason breaking the kid in half with a bed from "Freddy vs. Jason" with 225 of the vote, in forth was the famous ax to the head in "Wrong Turn" with 14.8% and in fifth was the ladder to the eye scene from "Final Destination 2" with 5.4%.

 


 

Best New Killer in a (Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Thriller) Film-

Bill Moseley as Otis Driftwood - House of 1000 Corpses

 

With 54.9% of the vote Otis Driftwood became the best new killer of 2003, followed by The Infected Zombies from "28 Days Later" with 19% of the vote, Angela Bettis as May in "May" with 17.4% took third, In forth was  The Flesh Eating Virus in "Cabin Fever" with 4.9%, and in fifth Julian Richings as Three Finger in Wrong Turn with 3.8%.

 


Best Horror/Sci-Fi/ Fantasy TV Show, TV Movie or Mini Series

 (Also includes films that were on TV before they came out on Video.)

- Beyond Re-Animator

 

"Beyond Re-Animator" came in first with 46.6% of the vote, followed by "Tremors : The Series" with 22.9%, in third was "Battlestar Galactica" with 13%, in forth was "Cube 2: Hypercube" with 11.5%,

and in fifth was "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer" with 6.1%.

 


Best Poster of the Year- Freddy vs. Jason

Well I'm glad that the biggest battle of the year was able to take home at least one award. With 32.6% Freddy vs. Jason" is the winner, followed by "House of 1000 Corpses" with 28%, in third was "28 Days Later" with 15% of the vote, followed by "Underworld" with 14.5% and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) with 9.8%.

 


 

 DVD of the Year- Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers : Special Edition

 

 With 34.2% of the vote "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: Special Edition" DVD is the winner. followed by "The Alien Quadrilogy" with 26.6%, in third was "Day of the Dead: Special Edition" with 21.7% followed by "House of 1000 Corpses" with 9.2% and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" with 8.2%.

 


 

Best Indie/B-Movie of 2003 - ***TIE*** "Blood Shot" and "Monsturd"

 

Holly Crap this is the first time ever tie for the top prize. First off I want to say that the Indie poll was crazy, so crazy that I had hide the results so no one would tamper with the voting. Well it looks like it ended in a tie. "Monsturd" and "Blood Shot" both tied for first with 22.7% of the votes each,  next was "Monstersdotcom" with 21.3% of the vote, followed by "Clearwater" with 17.6% and the movie I though was going to win "Freak Out" with 15.6%.

 


 

Best Sequel of 2003- Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

 

Yeah this is no surprise with 59.2% of the vote "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" takes yet another award, followed by "Freddy vs. Jason" with 22.9%, "Final Destination 2" with 10.6%, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" with 3.9% and "Jeepers Creepers 2" with 3.4%.

 


 

Best Score/Soundtrack - House of 1000 Corpses

 

In a neck to neck race with 33.9% of the vote "House of 1000 Corpses" just beat out "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" which had 31.6% for the top spot. "Kill Bill: Volume 1" took third with 26.9%. followed by "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" with 4.1% and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" with 3.5%.

 


Best Actor In A Horror/Thriller- Bill Moseley - House of 1000 Corpses

With 41.8% of the vote Bill Moseley took top honors for his performance as Otis in  "House of 1000 Corpses", In second was Crispin Glover in Willard with 25.3% followed by Robert Englund as Freddy in " Freddy vs. Jason" with 19.2%, Cillian Murphy for "28 Days Later" with 11.5% and Robert Downey Jr. for  "Gothika" with 2.2%.


Best Actress In A Horror/Thriller- Angela Bettis - May

With 43.8% of the vote Angela Bettis is the winner for her performance in "May", in second place was Jessica Biel  for her performance in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)" with 24.7% of the vote, there was tie for third between Eliza Dushku for "Wrong Turn" and Naomi Harris for "28 Days Later" with 13.7% each, and Halle Berry for "Gothika" took last with 4.1%.


Best Supporting Actor In A Horror/Thriller- Sid Haig - House of 1000 Corpses

Sid Haig killed the competition  for his performance in  "House of 1000 Corpses" with 57% of the vote followed by R. Lee Ermey who took second (23.8%)  and third place (7.3%) for his performances in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)" and "Willard". Jason Ritter took forth for "Freddy vs. Jason" with 6.6% and Jeremy Sisto for "Wrong Turn" took last with 5.3%.


Best Supporting Actress In A Horror/Thriller- Sheri Moon - House of 1000 Corpses

Some people augured with me that Sheri Moon should have been up for best actress for her role in "House of 1000 Corpses" but technically she was just a supporting actress in this film according to everyone who voted for her in the top five. It's hard to tell really with some many roles going on in that film. Anyway with 42.95 of the vote Sheri is the winner. Behind her in second was Anna Faris for  "May"  with 25.6%, in third was the great Karen Black for her roll as Mother Firefly in "House of 1000 Corpses" with 17.9%. followed by Kelly Rowland for "Freddy vs. Jason" with 7.7% and Penélope Cruz for "Gothika" with 5.8%.


Best Actor In A Sci-Fi/Fantasy- Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

With 58.3% of the vote Johnny Depp is the winner for his performance in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl", in second place was Viggo Mortensen for his performance in "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" with 23.6% of the vote, followed by Huge Jackman in "X-Men 2 "with 10.4%, Elijah Wood in "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" with 4.9% and Keanu Reeves  with 2.8% of the vote for his performance in "The Matrix Reloaded".


Best Actress In A Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film-

Keira Knightley - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

With 37.4% of the vote, Keira Knightley  is the winner for her performance in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", in second place was Kate Beckinsale  for her performance in "Underworld" with 24.4% of the vote, followed by Famke Janssen  in "X-Men 2" with 17.6%, Jennifer Connelly in "The Hulk" with 11.5% and Carrie Ann Moss with 9.2% of the vote for her performance in "The Matrix Reloaded".


Best Supporting Actor In A Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film- Sean Astin - Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Sean Astin has won with 42.1% of the vote for his performance in "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King", in second place was Sir. Ian McKellen for his performance in  "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" with 21.1% of the vote, followed by a Geoffrey Rush for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" with 14.3%, Orlando Bloom for  "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" with 12% and Colin Farrell for "Daredevil" with 10.5%.


Best Supporting Actress In a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film-

Miranda Otto - Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

 For the Second Year in a row and with 30.4% of the vote  Miranda Otto is the winner for her performance in "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" , There was a tie for second and third place with 20% of the vote each between Liv Tlyer for "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" and Anna Paquin for "X-Men 2" as well as a tie for the last two spots between Rebecca Romijn-Stamos for "X-Men 2" and Kristanna Loken for "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" with 14.8%.


Best Director (Horror/Thriller)- Rob Zombie - House of 1000 Corpses

  This one was a huge surprise to me, with 36.8% of the vote and the director who I considered the underdog, Rob Zombie won the Best Director award for "House of 1000 Corpses" In second was Danny Boyle for "28 Days Later" with 22.4%, in third was  Eli Roth for "Cabin Fever" with 16.7% followed by Lucky McKee for "May" with 15.5% and The Pang Brothers with 8.6% for "The Eye".


Best Director  (Sci-Fi/Fantasy)- Peter Jackson - Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

 For the third year in a row Peter Jackson has won with 80.4% of the vote for "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" In a far second was Gore Verbinski for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" with 7.6%, followed by Jonathan Mostow for "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" with 5.1%, Bryan Singer for "X-Men 2" with 3.8% and The Wachowski Brothers for "The Matrix Reloaded" with 3.2%.
